Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. X4 Engineering is a top-tier, national MEP consulting engineering firm seeking a Controls Design Engineer for Building Automation. The role involves designing comprehensive BMS/BAS packages and collaborating with drafting teams, all while working remotely from anywhere in the US.
Responsibilities
- Design Automation Architecture: Develop comprehensive BMS/BAS design packages, network risers, and detailed wiring diagrams for large-scale mechanical systems
- Instrumentation Selection: Calculate specifications and select catalog components (temperature/pressure sensors, flow meters, motorized control valves, and VFDs) to support complex data center cooling infrastructure
- Write Sequences of Operations: Author clear, logical sequences of operations that define how the building's automation system will control chillers, air handlers, and plant equipment
- Model Navigation: Coordinate with internal drafting teams to perform minor floor plan edits, tags, and basic model navigation using Revit or AutoCAD
Skills
- 3 to 7 Years of Experience: Proven background in building automation, control systems design, or application engineering
- BMS/BAS Platform Knowledge: Familiarity with major commercial DDC platforms (such as Siemens Desigo/Apogee, Schneider Electric EcoStruxure, Johnson Controls Metasys, Automated Logic WebCTRL, or Trane Tracer)
- The 'Integrator' Background Welcome: We highly value Application Engineers, Systems Engineers, and Designers from the controls contractor side who want to transition 'upstream' into consulting engineering
- Complex System Exposure: Prior data center experience is a plus, but not a dealbreaker
- Note: This is a mechanical automation role. Profiles focused strictly on IT networking, cloud administration, or software programming (Java, C++, Python) will not be considered
- Prior data center experience is a plus, but not a dealbreaker
- If you have designed controls for other highly critical environments (hospitals, labs, cleanrooms, or industrial plants), your skills will transfer seamlessly
Benefits
- 100% Remote Autonomy: Work from anywhere in the US with zero micromanagement.
- Career Transition: A perfect opportunity to move from a hectic contractor lifestyle into stable, high-level consulting engineering.
- Massive Project Scope: Put your stamp on some of the largest, most sophisticated digital infrastructure projects in the world.
- Comprehensive benefits package (medical, dental, vision, 401k match)
