HANDS ON role, reporting to a CFO that will be retiring soon.
We are seeking an experienced REIT Controller to support a dynamic real estate organization on a consulting basis in Dallas. This role will oversee core accounting operations, financial reporting, compliance, and process improvement initiatives within a REIT environment. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical accounting expertise, leadership capabilities, and experience managing complex real estate accounting functions in a fast-paced setting.
Key Responsibilities
• Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes for REIT operations
• Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with GAAP and REIT compliance requirements
• Manage general ledger activity, account reconciliations, and consolidation processes
• Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and internal stakeholders
• Ensure compliance with SEC reporting requirements, internal controls, and regulatory standards
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow analysis initiatives
• Lead process improvement efforts to enhance accounting efficiency and reporting accuracy
• Supervise and mentor accounting staff and collaborate cross-functionally with asset management, acquisitions, and finance teams
• Assist with system implementations, integrations, and accounting policy development as needed
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA a plus
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience with significant exposure to real estate or REIT environments
• Strong understanding of GAAP, and REIT compliance requirements
• Experience managing month-end close and financial reporting processes
• Advanced proficiency in Excel and ERP/accounting systems
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
• Ability to operate independently in a consulting or project-based environment
Preferred Experience
• Public accounting background preferred
• Experience with Yardi, MRI, or similar real estate accounting platforms
• Prior experience supporting publicly traded REITs or institutional real estate firms
