The Role
As a College Admissions Counselor at Empowerly, you will work closely with high school students, primarily from the San Francisco Bay Area, who aspire to attend top 50 colleges, including UCs and Ivy League schools. Many of our students are pre-med or computer science majors, and we are looking for counselors who can provide expert guidance in these areas.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Creating academic and extracurricular roadmaps to help students achieve their goals
- Providing college application structure and feedback, including essay review and editing
- Assisting with passion discovery and early career development
- Guiding students through the entire application process, from creating college lists to strategizing early action, early decision, and regular decision plans
- Discussing financial aid resources and guidance, as well as merit scholarship opportunities
- Preparing for sessions in advance, being on time, and maintaining a healthy relationship with parents and students
- Attending monthly team meetings and staying up-to-date with Empowerly communications
Key Responsibilities
As a College Admissions Counselor, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Keeping up-to-date with current college admission changes and trends
- Managing a caseload of 20-25 students, with flexibility based on schedule and bandwidth
- Advising students on extracurricular activities that expand their interests and present leadership opportunities
- Helping students create meaningful summer plans, including internships, research opportunities, and community service
- Developing strategies for standardized testing, including improving scores and selecting the right tests
- Creating college lists, rating colleges, and offering tips for college visits
- Guiding students through the application process, including essay review and editing, and utilizing research when necessary
- Strategizing plans for early action, early decision, regular decision, and waitlisted strategies
- Discussing financial aid resources and guidance, as well as merit scholarship opportunities
Requirements and Qualifications
To be successful as a College Admissions Counselor at Empowerly, you will need:
Essential Qualifications:
- A graduate degree from a top 50 national university (advanced degrees like MD, PhD, MBA, JD, or Masters are a plus)
- Experience as a college counselor for high school students, with a track record of acceptances into top 50 national universities
- Consistent availability in the afternoons (after 3:00 p.m.) and/or on weekends to meet with students
- A passion for education, talent for teaching, essay writing, and essay editing
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills
- The ability to plan around and meet deadlines
- Dedication to client service and a commitment to students for multi-year packages
Preferred Qualifications:
- Former admissions officers at top 50 colleges
- Experienced independent college counselors (NACAC, WACAC, IECA, etc.)
- A STEM background, preferably in computer science, engineering, and/or medicine
